Event Description

Food for Thought: A Center for Advanced Study public events series featuring presentations of research and creative projects by recent CAS Associates and Fellows.

We are delighted to showcase the work of some of our most productive and creative faculty in this informal series of intellectually and spiritually invigorating presentations. You are invited to drop in when you can and enjoy a bite to eat while you learn about the exciting projects undertaken by our faculty.

11:00am, Anne Sickles, The Quark Gluon Plasma: Looking Inside the Hottest Matter in the Universe

The Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is a state of matter that existed in nature very shortly after the Big Bang and has a temperature of several trillion degrees. In order to recreate and study this matter in the laboratory, Professor Sickles' group used particle accelerators and specially designed detectors. In this talk, she will discuss what we know about the QGP based on measurements at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. She will also discuss her work on sPHENIX, the new detector which came online this year and will provide new information on how the QGP properties change with temperature.

Noon, Deke Weaver, The Unreliable Bestiary and CETACEAN

Professor Weaver will chat about CETACEAN, the sixth performance from his life-long project, The Unreliable Bestiary. Since 2009, the Unreliable Bestiary has brought us stories about the multi-faceted relationships between animals, humans, and planet earth. CETACEAN (Stock Pavilion, September 28 to October 2, 2023) interweaves tales of the sea and failing ecosystems in a large-scale multi-media production.
