Daniel C. Littlefield

African American Studies

Professor of history, afro-american studies and research program

Professor Littlefield joined the UIUC faculty in 1988. He has held previous research appointments at the National Humanities Center, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; the Institute for Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina; and the Ford Foundation and National Research Council. His project at the Center for Advanced Study is titled “African Ethnicity in South Carolina” and seeks to assess the importance and durability of perceptions of ethnicity among the enslaved population of that region. This focus is part of a larger study on the development of local slave culture. He will also work on another project dealing with the crisis of slavery among prominent personalities of the revolutionary generation.
