The study attempts to analyze descriptively and theoretically various aspects of African multilingualism by surveying the number of linguae francae spoken in the continent, examining the impact of societal multilingualism on the structures of selected linguae francae, analyzing code-mixed data and their theoretical implications on the theory of code-mixing, and considering critically the types of language policies adopted by African states and the impact of such policies vis-à-vis education. By addressing these various areas, Bokamba hopes to provide not only a comprehensive and state-of-the-art study of multilingualism in Africa but also to fill a major gap in the general scholarship on this phenomenon, and to redefine some of the theoretical conceptualizations of the areas covered in the study.
