Professor Todorova specializes in the history of Eastern Europe, in particular the Balkans and the Ottoman Empire in the modern period. Her research revolves around problems of nationalism, socialism, historiography, and historical demography. She is the recipient of numerous awards (including the Guggenheim and the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin) and honorary degrees (Sofia University, European University Institute, Florence and most recently, Panteion University, Athens, Greece).
