Event Description

Professor Randeria will give a personal perspective on the development of science in India, with particular emphasis on physics.  He will begin with a brief summary of scientific achievements in ancient India, particularly the "discovery" of zero.  Focusing primarily on the development of physics in the 20th century, he will describe the pioneering work of Bose, Raman, and others in the years before independence in 1947, and conclude with a discussion of the growth of various educational and research institutions in the post-independence era.
