Professor Emeritus

Lou van den Dries

CAS Professor Emeritus of Mathematics

Since the late 1970s Professor van den Dries has applied metamathematical (model-theoretic) methods to better understand various mathematical structures. In the early 1980s this led him to isolating the crucial “logical” property of O-minimality that has since become a recognized area within model theory with applications going far beyond logic. In addition to his work on O-minimality, he has made fundamental contributions to such areas as the model theory of p-adic analytic functions, decidability of the algebraic integers, and the logic of finite fields.

From the mid-1990s on, he has focused his attention on transseries. In 2017, this led to the publication of the book Asymptotic Differential Algebra and Model Theory of Transseries coauthored with Matthias Aschenbrenner and Joris van der Hoeven and published by Princeton University Press as number 195 in their series Annals of Mathematics Studies.
