IDENTITIES "ON THE MOVE": STUDENT MOBILITY AND USES OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

Professor Rizvi’s research focuses on issues of identity, culture, and the internationalization of higher education. He has been exploring issues of transnational mobility and globalization from the perspective of international students, describing their student and alumni experiences and considering the extent to which their developing cosmopolitan cultural tastes are reproduced through a new colonial imagination and sustained through a range of post-colonial globalizing practices. More broadly, he has considered how their aspirations relate to the dilemmas of globalization—to the opportunities provided by the new knowledge economy and global labor markets, on the one hand, and to the perceptions and demands of national and local needs, on the other.

During his Center appointment, Professor Rizvi plans to complete a book based on a large number of interviews he has conducted with graduates of international education on their return to their home communities in China, India, and Malaysia. The book will examine how these students seek to reinsert themselves into their home communities and the ways in which they use their international experiences and networks.
