CAS/MillerComm | APPLICATION AND INSTRUCTIONS
Please see below for instructions and application materials for submission to the George A. Miller Programs Committee. Once you have completed the application and have received all 3 supporting letters, please contact Naomi Young naomiy@illinois.edu. She will send you a Box invitation with a request for you to upload your materials. PDFs are preferred, but Word documents are acceptable.
1. COVER SHEET: Please list your name, email address, and home unit(s) and include the same information for any co-applicant(s). Include the title, abstract, and 2 preferred dates/time for the proposed event. The abstract should be a short paragraph that describes the event to an educated but non-specialist audience.
2. PROPOSAL: Provide a 2-page, single-spaced (1,000 words) description of the presentation. CAS/MillerComm events are broadly interdisciplinary and are for the benefit of the campus audience as well as the public at large. What will the presentation be about? Who is the projected audience? If campus, please list units that would most likely be involved. If community, please identify organizations that should be aware of this event.
3. SCHEDULE: Besides the MillerComm event, the visitor is expected to interact with the campus community, particularly students. The committee thus requests the visitor’s detailed schedule of activities (in list form). These might include lunch discussions, classroom visits, or invited seminars. Please include travel information if known.
4. BIOGRAPHY: Provide a short (1-page) biography of the proposed visitor, highlighting exceptional qualifications and noting key publications or awards. Briefly discuss the visitor’s expertise and ability to communicate to a broad interdisciplinary campus audience and public at large.
5. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: Technical rider(s), if any, must be disclosed as part of the proposal in order for the committee to accurately evaluate the proposed event budget and consider the appropriate venue.
6. BUDGET: One hallmark of a MillerComm event is its appeal to a broad, interdisciplinary audience. This is most easily demonstrated by the list of units who support the proposed event by contributing financial and/or help with publicity. For examples of previously successful MillerComm events including lists of cosponsoring units please visit our website.
Please indicate on the attached budget worksheet not only the financial support from the host and cosponsoring units but the list of units who are unable to contribute funds but are willing to help post to departmental websites, list servs, social media, and other outlets.
6. REFERENCES: Provide three (3) referee letters supporting your application for the proposed speaker/visitor. Please provide the following instructions to your referees:
The George A. Miller Programs Committee accepts applications for partial funding of visiting speakers or performers and includes them in this prestigious program of lectures and cultural events. The CAS/MillerComm public events series brings to campus people who offer unique cross-disciplinary contributions to the intellectual and cultural life of the university. The visits of these guests should also be designed to encourage their interactions with the university community, particularly students. All CAS/MillerComm events are free and open to the public.
We would like your candid and critical appraisal of the proposed speaker/visitor.
In your letter of support, address the nominee's excellence as a scholar, artist, or professional; potential contribution to the life of the campus; and anticipated level of interaction with faculty and students in the sponsoring unit(s) and in cross-disciplinary venues. Proposals that cross disciplinary lines are strongly encouraged.
