Event Description

Professor Buchanan’s paper concerns how the interface of the everyday and the cosmological in postsocialist Bulgaria is being sounded, heard, and enacted through cultural performance. Specifically, she will juxtapose three incidents, each encountered during a year’s fieldwork in 2010–11, when the sound worlds of Christianity and Islam collided, revealing a politics of religious nationalism whose contested audibility, through bellringing and the call to prayer, staked a certain moral claim on the public space of Bulgaria’s future.
