Trends in World Social Development: Implications for the United States and Other "Rich" Countries

Monday, March 25th, 1996
Richard Estes
8:00pm

Room 407, Levis Faculty Center

919 West Illinois Street, Urbana

Event Description

Despite enormous levels of international assistance, social and economic development continues to occur unevenly throughout the world. For the most part, the social situation of advanced nations is improving steadily, while that of many of the poorest remains bleak, particularly in the "least developing countries" (LCDs) of Asian, Africa, and Latin America. This lecture will trace worldwide trends in social development over the last 25 years, highlighting the implications of these trends for the United States and other comparatively wealthy countries. Dr. Estes will also suggest a 13-point action agenda for narrowing the development gap between rich and poor nations.

The Sixth Annual Daniel S. Sanders Peace and Justice Lecture.
Internationally known as a leader in efforts to achieve world peace, Daniel S. Sanders was dean of the UIUC School of Social Work from 1986-1989.
