Professor Ceperley’s work can be broadly classified into technical contributions to quantum Monte Carlo methods and contributions to our physical or formal understanding of quantum many-body systems. His most important contribution is his calculation of the energy of the electron gas, providing basic input for most numerical calculations of electronic structure. He was one of the pioneers in the development and application of computational methods for quantum systems, such as superfluid helium and hydrogen under extreme conditions.

He was awarded the Feenberg Medal for contributions to condensed matter physics in 1994 and the Rahman Prize for contributions to computational physics by the American Physical Society in 1998 and the B. J. Alder CECAM Prize in 2016. Fellow: American Physical Society, and Institute of Physics. Member: American Academy of Arts and Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, and International Academy of Quantum Molecular Sciences. Founder Professor of Engineering and Blue Waters Professor at the University of Illinois.
