Mark Stephen Micale
HYSTERICAL MALES: MEDICINE AND MASCULINE NERVOUS ILLNESS FROM THE RENAISSANCE TO FREUD
Professor Micale’s previous work has dealt mainly with the history of psychiatry, especially in Europe and North America during the nineteenth century. During his Center appointment he plans to complete a book-length project titled Hysterical Males: Medicine and Masculine Nervous Illness from the Renaissance to Freud. The book will be a full-scale study of medicine, masculinity, and nervous and emotional ill-health, drawing on a wide range of medical texts from England, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria across a 300-year period.
