What is American Opera Today?

Thursday, January 19th, 2012
Francesca Zambello
4:00 pm

Knight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum 600 South Gregory Street Urbana

Event Description

Francesca Zambello is  general and artistic director of The Glimmerglass Opera Festival and artistic advisor for Washington Opera.  Her directing career includes new and canonical works at many of the world's most venerable theatres.  At a time when theatres are especially vulnerable to financial vicissitudes, Ms. Zambello's support of living librettists/playwrights and composers and her concern for American culture are bolstering the vitality and social relevance of the lyrical stage.   Her presence on campus coincides with her Chicago Lyric Opera production of Kern and Hammerstein's Show Boat, featuring the internationally renowned baritone and UIUC voice faculty member, Nathan Gunn.
Hosted by: Department of Theatre, OLLI/Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, School of Music

In conjunction with:  Department of Dance, Department of English, Department of History, Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, Spurlock Museum
