Asian Regeneration? Stem Cell Research and Medical Tourism in Emerging Asian Bio-Economies

Thursday, October 7th, 2010
Charis Thompson
4:00pm

Knight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum 600 South Gregory Street Urbana

Event Description

Through comparisons of key stem cell research laboratories in South Korea and Singapore, and with reference to other Asian countries, it can be seen that from lab mores to nationalist discourse about scientific excellence, to medical tourism, each country differs in the cultural, ethical, economic and scientific strategies implemented. Charis Thompson thus argues against the idea that there is a single bio-political paradigm at work in Asian biomedicine, while suggesting that the need for scholarship on Asia region biotech and biomedicine remains great.
